Oahu Hawaii First Day Itinerary — It’s Finally Happening.
The backdrop of Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii. The harbor where From Here to Eternity was filmed. Pearl Harbor, where history stands still. I’d been dreaming about this place for as long as I can remember — Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head, the whole thing. And as the plane began its descent toward the island, something shifted. My heart actually started racing.
Not the nervous kind. The good kind. The kind you feel when something you’ve imagined for years is about to become real.

2. 🛬 Landing in Hawaii Feels Different
We touched down at 12:05 PM at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, and the second I walked out of the arrivals hall — I stopped. No clouds. Blazing blue sky. Tropical plants lining the walkway, swaying gently. The air was warm but not heavy. It smelled like something I didn’t have a word for.
*Oh. This is real.*
We picked up our rental — a Subaru SUV Crosstrek — and pulled out of the lot. First deep breath of Oahu air. The drive toward Waikiki had already started to feel like a vacation.
3. 🍱 Food Stop #1: Tanioka’s Seafoods & Catering — The Smart Lunch on the Way In
On the drive from the airport to Waikiki, we made one smart detour — Tanioka’s Seafoods & Catering), a local favorite that most tourists never find. With a 4:00 PM check-in, we had time to burn anyway, so it made perfect sense: kill the wait, grab a real lunch, and get a taste of authentic Hawaii all in one stop.
**Tanioka’s** is a local institution. Open since 1978, it sits along the route between the airport and Waikiki — so it costs you almost no extra time. But the food? It’s the kind of thing you’d never find unless a local pointed you there.

At 4:00 PM, we checked into our base camp for the next five nights — Courtyard by Marriott Waikiki Beach. Right in the heart of Waikiki, and after actually staying here, I can say this: if you’re traveling with family, this hotel earns its place on the shortlist.
The Courtyard by Marriott Waikiki Beach sits just a short walk from the beach — about 10 to 15 minutes on foot, through the heart of Waikiki. That’s close enough to grab your towel and go, but still in a slightly quieter pocket away from the loudest stretch of Kalakaua.

☕ One detail I want to mention: the complimentary Hawaiian Rainforest coffee in the rooms. It’s a small thing. But starting each morning quietly, watching light come up over the rooftops with a hot cup in my hand — that turned into the most peaceful part of each day.
5. 🌊 Waikiki Beach — Exactly What You Imagined, and Then Some
After check-in, we changed into swimwear and walked over.
The route from the hotel: Kuhio Ave → Royal Hawaiian Ave → Kalakaua Ave → Waikiki Surf Alley. About 10 to 15 minutes. The walk itself is half the fun — shops, restaurants, tourists from everywhere in the world, street performers. You don’t need a plan. Just walk and look.
We staked out a spot on the sand, laid down our towels, and looked up.
Not a single cloud.
The water was warm. Not cold-warm — actually warm. I floated on a tube for a while and looked out at Diamond Head in the distance, thinking: “I’m going up there tomorrow.” That thought alone made me smile.
By the time we got out of the water, the light had shifted. The sun was dropping toward the horizon, and Waikiki turned gold. This is the beach that Elvis filmed on. The one in “Blue Hawaii“, the one that’s been on postcards and magazine covers and screensavers for decades. And I was standing in it, wet sand between my toes, watching the same sunset.
It wasn’t a dream anymore.
Practical tips for Waikiki Beach:
- Bring a waterproof dry bag — put your cash and cards in it and keep it on your body in the water. Don’t leave anything valuable on a towel unattended.
- Skip the mouth-inflated tubes — bring a small hand pump. You’ll thank yourself.
- Best sunset view: Face toward Diamond Head between 5:30 and 6:00 PM. That’s your shot.
- Hawaii’s sun is no joke — the UV index runs high year-round, and skin burns faster than you’d expect. If you do get too much sun, pick up an aloe gel and keep it in the mini fridge. Cool and straight from the fridge, it calms the burn and helps with moisture recovery.
- For most of our day-to-day supplies on the trip, we picked things up at ABC Stores — and they’re literally everywhere in Waikiki. What I didn’t know until we got there: ABC Store actually started in Hawaii back in 1949, making it one of the island’s most established local chains. Convenient, well-stocked, and open late.
6. 🍜 Dinner: Marugame Udon — Worth Every Minute of the Wait
After showering off the beach salt, we walked five minutes from the hotel to Marugame Udon for dinner. There was a line. There’s always a line. But it moved faster than it looked — maybe 10 to 15 minutes from the back of the queue to having a tray in our hands.

The noodles are pulled fresh in front of you. The broth is clean and deep. And at $15 to $18 per person, it’s genuinely one of the best value meals you’ll find in Waikiki — where a sit-down dinner for two can easily run $80 to $120.
💡 Order tip: Decide what you want while you’re in line. The tempura pieces are self-serve — you grab them off the display as you move through the queue. Get there with a plan and you won’t hold anyone up.

And just like that, my first day in Hawaii gently came to a close. From the first bite of fresh poke at Tanioka’s to the sun-drenched waters of Waikiki Beach, from a breathtaking golden sunset to a comforting bowl of Marugame Udon—it took only twelve hours to understand why this island is universally called a ‘dream destination.’.
Walking back, under the shadow of beautiful historic buildings and among travelers who seemed to have forgotten the meaning of hurry, a quiet warmth washed over me. I wasn’t just watching this beautiful, serene world go by anymore—I was finally part of it.
